Bezos-backed $200M species project faces greenwashing scrutiny

In a CBC News feature, Wren is asked for her expert opinion on the latest project the Bezos Earth Fund is putting $100 million US to — The Phoenix Species Project. The initiatives aims to help recover 100 threatened species.

She shares that "they may actually be doing the good thing, but we like to think on balance," pointing out the principle of ‘selective disclosure’ that the Greenwash Action Lab’s framework includes.

"Even if it's credible and they're doing it, but they're hiding a lot of bad stuff, then we'd still think of it as greenwashing."

Wren also points out that philanthropy need not distract from the need for governments and corporations to address biodiversity loss and climate change.
