New tool to challenge greenwashing claims goes live as companies weigh strategy

In June 2024, Canadian greenwashing laws were strengthened under Bill C-59. One year later, CTV News reflects on the impacts of the changes.

The impacts have included pull-back on net-zero and carbon neutrality commitments from notable Canadian companies.

In response to criticism on the vagueness of the legislation, further guidelines have since been introduced. CTV News reports on the viewpoints of multiple stakeholder groups, including Wren Montgomery’s perspective as a researcher on greenwash.

She argues the law improves market competition and makes room for those aiming to ‘do good.’

It’s often these smaller, newer, really sustainable, pure-play sustainability companies that the innovation is coming from.”

“In my research, we see that greenwash is driving them out, so it’s making it really hard for them to get rewarded for bringing that value to the market.
